EUROPEAN ELECTIONS 2024: THE GREENS FOCUS ON ‘MORE HUMAN’ SECURITY

EUROPEAN ELECTIONS 2024: THE GREENS FOCUS ON ‘MORE HUMAN’ SECURITY

For the Greens, security is an important issue. However, ‘security is about strong civil societies, a just global transition and long-term preventive strategies, not just defence’, the manifesto states.

The Greens call for ‘responsibility’. They link the need to ‘defend the security of the EU’ to the defence of ‘peace and universal values in our neighbourhood and in the world’.

To achieve this, they ‘call for a credible policy of solidarity and mutual assistance, in accordance with Article 42(7) of the Treaty on European Union’. This implies ‘cooperation on military capabilities and the creation of synergies, for example by promoting interoperability and coordinating acquisition, maintenance and supply systems’.

It also advocates strengthening the European External Action Service (EEAS) to make it ‘the force for truly transnational diplomacy, capable of combating impunity and establishing reconciliation and lasting peace’.

No mention is made of the defence industry.

However, the Greens insist on the control of arms exports. ‘Exhaustive control mechanisms for arms exports to all partners must be put in place’, says the manifesto. And for authoritarian regimes responsible for human rights violations, they demand a total ban.

Like other political groups, the Greens point to the threat of disinformation and interference in democracies, calling for efforts in the field of cybersecurity to combat them.
