EUROPEAN ELECTIONS 2024 : Diplomacy and disarmament at the heart of the Left’s programme

The Group of the European Left wants “Europe to take responsibility for its security autonomously and independently of the USA, based on multilateralism and respect for international law”. To achieve this, the manifesto recommends giving priority to “diplomatic solutions to international conflicts”.

Far from supporting the defence industry, the Left believes that “instead of militarising the EU, Europe needs a political agenda for peace, security, and disarmament”.

Disarmament is undoubtedly the key word in the manifesto. It calls to “end the arms race in Europe” and for “Europe to become a “nuclear weapon free continent”.

The party reaffirms its opposition to the expansion of NATO and proposes that “neutrality and non-alignment” should be “role models for a peaceful European security order”.

Finally, the manifesto stresses that the European Security and Defence Policy cannot be imposed on the Member States.
